Dense red-purple; luscious, concentrated ripe fruit and vanillin oak bouquet leads on to a palate with a cascade of plum, spice, vanilla and mint flavours, finishing with slightly disjointed tannins still coming together so early in its life. Could well end up in the highest rank. Drink to 2016.

Officially the Bin Series was born in 1959. But in truth, Penfolds first Bin wine was created in 1951 by the now legendary chief winemaker, Max Schubert. Back then, the experimental wine was simply known as Bin 1, referring to its storage location in Penfolds cellars while ageing. 1952 was Bin 4. Later vintages carried various designations as Max continued to refine what was to eventually become the most lauded wine in Australian history. Fruit is selected on merit to suit a particular style of wine. With each expressing its own personality while exhibiting a distinctive Penfolds ‘quality stamp’. Bin wines are numbered, rather than individually named, after the particular bin, or rack, in the cellar where they were stored.
