In the 19th century many individual growers in the region joined together out of economic necessity to form small wine-growing cooperatives: they aimed to work more efficiently by joining forces. As a result of these mergers, three major sub-regional cooperatives had been founded by 1960:
Gebietswinzergenossenschaft des Kreises Cochem in Ernst
Winzergenossenschaft Mittelmosel in Wehlen
Saar-Winzerverein in Wiltingen
In 1969 these cooperatives merged with Hauptkellerei Koblenz to form the largest wine-growing cooperative in the state of Rheinland-Pfalz. The result was the creation of Moselland located in Bernkastel Kues. For more than a quarter of a century the name Moselland has guaranteed consistent high quality. As a result, in 2000 members of the Nahe wine-growing cooperative decided to join this successful company.
In 2004 Moselland eG started a joint venture with the cooperatives Gebietswinzergenossenschaft Rietburg eG/Pfalz and Niersteiner Weingenossenschaft eG/Rheinhessen. These cooperatives remain independent with their individual members, but belong to Moselland eG.
