Bonneau du Martray Corton Charlemagne Grand Cru 2018 750ml
France, Burgundy, Cote De Beaune
Chardonnay
What follows is an explication of scores at Burghound.com and the underlying taste values they reflect. While ratings may influence your decision, the ultimate judgment is your palate.
95 – 100
Truly incomparable and emotionally thrilling. A wine so rated is as good as a wine gets. By definition, it is reference standard for its appellation.
90 – 94
Outstanding. Worth a special effort to purchase and cellar and will provide memorable drinking experiences.
85 – 89
Good to High quality. Wines that offer solid quality in every respect and generally very good typicity. “Good Value” wines will often fall into this category. Worth your attention.
80 – 84
Average quality. The wine may be “correct”, unless noticeable flaws are indicated in the narrative, and provide straightforward, drinking.
76 – 79
Barely Acceptable quality. The wine is not worth your attention nor is it a good value.
75 and below
Don’t Bother. A wine with noticeable, irremediable flaws.
A cool, pure and elegant nose combines notes of various white fleshed fruit scents that in particular include Granny Smith apples and pear, along with hints of citrus and wet stone. There is excellent intensity as well as fine richness to the detailed and mineral-driven flavors where the minerality adds a sense of lift to the complex and sneaky long finale. This is lovely and should be approachable a bit sooner than its 2017 counterpart.
This is the only estate in Burgundy to exclusively produce wine from Grand cru vineyards. The estate is currently owned and managed by Jean-Charles de la Moriniere who inherited it from his father in 1994. Jean-Charles has been working on moving viticultural management and the care of the vineyard toward a biodynamic philosophy and away from the previous use of herbicides to manage weeds and pests. He has also worked to reduce yields significantly in an effort to improve the intensity and quality of the finished wine.
Only two wines are produced from the vineyard holdings of the domaine: a White Burgundy with Chardonnay grapes and a Red Burgundy with Pinot Noir grapes.
Clive Coates describes Bonneau Du Martray's white Corton-Charlemagne wine as "one of the very greatest in all Burgundy" and Hugh Johnson lists Bonneau du Martray as one of the leading Côte d'Or producers and gives the estate his highest rating of 4 stars indicating "exceptionally fine or great quality, consistent over many vintages".
