Ponsot Clos de la Roche Cuvee Vieilles Vignes Grand Cru 2008 - 3bots 750mlx3
France, Burgundy, Cote De Nuits
Pinot Noir
What follows is an explication of scores at Burghound.com and the underlying taste values they reflect. While ratings may influence your decision, the ultimate judgment is your palate.
95 – 100
Truly incomparable and emotionally thrilling. A wine so rated is as good as a wine gets. By definition, it is reference standard for its appellation.
90 – 94
Outstanding. Worth a special effort to purchase and cellar and will provide memorable drinking experiences.
85 – 89
Good to High quality. Wines that offer solid quality in every respect and generally very good typicity. “Good Value” wines will often fall into this category. Worth your attention.
80 – 84
Average quality. The wine may be “correct”, unless noticeable flaws are indicated in the narrative, and provide straightforward, drinking.
76 – 79
Barely Acceptable quality. The wine is not worth your attention nor is it a good value.
75 and below
Don’t Bother. A wine with noticeable, irremediable flaws.

There is a subtle but certainly not invisible touch of brett to the otherwise cool, ripe and complex aromas of plum, red and dark berries, earth and plenty of spice nuances. There is both good volume and energy to the well-detailed broad-shouldered flavors that culminate in an edgy and mildly drying finale. It's hard to know how much of the problem with the finish is attributable to the brett as often there is gas when there is brett which causes the supporting tannins to seem more prominent. My score is a compromise as this is not a bad wine but it's obviously not technically perfect. Moreover it's entirely possible that other bottles would show quite differently if there was no brett. I will have to try another bottle to see if the problem is limited to just this bottle or whether it's systemic.
The philosophy of field Ponsot have three types of viticulture that are pest management, organic farming and biodynamics are all based on a negative conclusion: the man went too far in its quest for profitability and is not worried about the future of the vine. And it is a reality they have no doubt. Domaine Ponsot, this concern or rather this approach with respect for nature is very old. It is a reflection of all the so-called "peasant" based on common sense tradition. And all generations since the founding of the area in 1872 agreed with this love of nature and therefore it is observed. And all that is preached today in patterns of three ways to work mentioned above is implemented for ages at Domaine Ponsot, but are not obliged to invent a name to describe the operation of culture. Far modes, they have always tried to express through a "natural" cultural richness of the Burgundian. Human intervention is limited and only applied to the care that the vine needs, without ever trying to force him into anything In summary, the long tradition of their family in this light left to Nature the most part, today brings them a particularly good state of their vineyard. And any intervention on their part is dictated by circumstances and appeals to common sense on the one hand and the more natural the other products. What they do is always rediscovered today by the majority of technicians and hence it has been necessary to invent names to describe practical yet well known ... There are hundreds of years!
