The 2023 Scharzhofberger Kabinett is a fabulous expression of this coolish cru where Egon Müller holds more vineyards than anybody else and certainly in the very best spots. The regular Kabinett is dense, refined and elegant on the slate-driven and still aloof nose. Savory and fresh on the first palate, with racy acidity, this is a tight and still young Riesling with ripe and concentrated fruit. Due to the coolish August last year, the Kabinett has a pronounced acidity and comes like "a fist without the velvet glove," as Egon Müller describes it. The residual sugar is more palatable than in the Wiltinger Braune Kupp Kabinett at this stage, but this Scharzhofberger is developing slowly and should be cellared fr another 6+ years at least. When, in 1797, Jean-Jacques Koch acquired the Scharzhof farm from the French Republic, he laid the foundations for the estate in its present form. French revolutionary troops occupied the Electorate if trier ( Kurfurstentum Trier) and the exclaves around Wiltingen and Kenzern, which were part of its territory and belonged to the Dukedom of Luxemburg, and one year later they confiscated all church property.
After the death of Jean-Jacques Koch, the property was divided among his seven children. His daughter Elizabeth married Felix Muller and through inhertitance and further purchases, the two were able to more or less double the size of the property by the 1850s. In Thereseâ??s father Eduard Tuckermann, bought the share that Egonâ??s sister Felicitas held in the Muller-Koch estate for 150,000 gold marks.
In the following years, Egon Muller I. was instrumental in creating the reputation that the Scharzhof estate enjoys to this day. His successful attendance of world exhibitions such as the 1900 Exposition Universelle et Inaternationale in Paris, played an important part in the process. After his death in 1932, the estate winery was divided among his two sons Egon and Felix.
Egon Muller II was in charge of the estate for only a few years. On 12 July 1941, he had a fatal tractor accident in the vineyards. Afterwards his wife ran the Scharzhof with the help of her two daughters during those difficult war years. As, in those days, it was fertilizer or pestisides or pesticides, the vineyards deteriorated steadily until the end of the war.
On 15 August 1945, Egon Muller III returned home from England where he had been a prisoner of war. The first harvest that he managed to bring in shortly afterwards, in the autumn of 1945, amounted to more that 1,200 litres produced from 7.4 hectares of land. In 1954, Egon Muller III was able to take overto take over the Le Gallais estate winery: he acquired one half of the 2.5 hectares of vineyards in thr wiltinger Kupp and Braune Kupp sites and leased the other half. Since then, Le Gallais has been managed by the Muller family and the wines have been produced in the Scharzhof winery.
