Wine Advocate #238, Sep 1, 2018, by Mark Squires
The 2015 Tinto, the Estate red with just Quinta do Noval on the label, is a blend of 70% Touriga Nacional, 20% Touriga Franca, 5% Tinta Roriz and 5% Tinto Cão, all aged for 18 months in French oak of varying ages (only 30% new). It comes in at just 13.7% alcohol. This has been seen before but only as a tank sample. This has come along beautifully, showing fine purity of fruit, plenty of power and that old-school mid-palate finesse that Noval has as its normal style. Tight, intense and very precise, this also finishes with a burst of fruit. This can still age and improve too. When I first saw it, it had the power to age, but I was less sure of its balance. It seems to have answered that question. Carlos Agrellos still says he likes the overall balance in 2016 somewhat more (and I agree), but this is no slouch.
