ABOUT OPUS ONE VINTAGE 2020
The 2020 harvest was the most challenging in the 41-year history of Opus One. Periods of high temperatures during the growing season, which is not uncommon in the Napa Valley, coupled with the presence of regional wildfires in mid-August and late September, made 2020 an unprecedented year.
After the outbreak of the Glass Fire in late September, the emotionally painful decision was made to suspend the 2020 Harvest. Two of Opus One·s core values are Absolute Quality and the Importance of the Individual, the Family, and the Community. These two principles guided the ultimate decision in order to preserve and protect the quality of the wine and the safety of our employees.
In anticipation of the fall 2023 release for the 2020 vintage, Opus One made the decision to release library reserves of the 2017, 2018, and 2019 vintages to ensure that the winery services the requirements of the trade partners in the US and International markets. Fortunately, the 2018 and 2019 vintages delivered higher than normal yields and simultaneously provided excellent quality. In addition, the 2017 vintage, which has been applauded in the market since its release in the fall of 2020, had its allocation reduced due to the impacts of Covid-19. In anticipation of the Fall 2023 Opus One release, the international team will carefully allocate the 2018 and 2019 vintages to meet the strong worldwide demand for Opus One. We will hold the 2020 vintage in our Library Reserve for very special and limited offers in the future.
