Exceptional. Wines that have won major trophy/trophies in important wine shows, or are of that standard.
95 - 96
Outstanding. Wines of gold medal standard, usually with a great pedigree.

Wines on the cusp of gold medal status, virtually indistinguishable from those wines receiving 95 points.
90 - 93
Highly Recommended. Wines of silver medal standard, wines of great quality, style and character, and worthy of a place in any cellar.

Recommended. Wines on the cusp of silver medal standard, the difference purely a judgement call.
86 - 88
Wines of bronze medal standard, well produced, flavoursome wines, usually not requiring cellaring.

Acceptable. Wines of good commercial quality, free from significant fault.

Padthaway, Coonawarra, Wrattonbully, McLaren Vale and Barossa Valley fruit. Matured 12 months in 27% new French and 8% new American oak hogsheads. Nuances of menthol and eucalypt not often seen in Bin 407, perhaps the presence of Padthaway taking a stronger lead this vintage? This might also be the explanation, too, for a more saline feel to the palate. All the classic blackcurrant, cassis and roast capsicum expected of Bin 407 hold through a finish of impressive line and length, sustained by strong, fine-grained, mineral tannins.

Penfolds has managed to create a truly unique and distinctive winemaking signature the Penfolds stamp, of which every member of the Penfolds winemaking team is immensely and justifiably proud.
Officially the Bin Series was born in 1959. But in truth, Penfolds first Bin wine was created in 1951 by the now legendary chief winemaker, Max Schubert. Back then, the experimental wine was simply known as Bin 1, referring to its storage location in Penfolds cellars while ageing. 1952 was Bin 4. Later vintages carried various designations as Max continued to refine what was to eventually become the most lauded wine in Australian history. Fruit is selected on merit to suit a particular style of wine. With each expressing its own personality while exhibiting a distinctive Penfolds ‘quality stamp’. Bin wines are numbered, rather than individually named, after the particular bin, or rack, in the cellar where they were stored.
