The Pian delle Vigne estate is located 3.5 miles (6 kilometers) south of Montalcino and takes its name from a typical 19th century railroad located on the property. The estate consists of some 460 total acres (184 hectares), approximately 165 of which are planted to vines. The vineyards have a predominantly southeastern exposure and their altitude varies from 430 to 660 feet (130-200 meters) above sea level. The calcareous clay soil is rich in small stones.
