Matured for 17 months in new American oak barriques of such quality that it doesn't go to war with the fruit - or is it simply that the fruit has sucked it up? It really doesn't matter any more that some will politely move to one side and let others buy (and even drink) this wine, revelling in the mega amounts of fruit, oak and tannins.

Officially the Bin Series was born in 1959. But in truth, Penfolds first Bin wine was created in 1951 by the now legendary chief winemaker, Max Schubert. Back then, the experimental wine was simply known as Bin 1, referring to its storage location in Penfolds cellars while ageing. 1952 was Bin 4. Later vintages carried various designations as Max continued to refine what was to eventually become the most lauded wine in Australian history. Fruit is selected on merit to suit a particular style of wine. With each expressing its own personality while exhibiting a distinctive Penfolds ‘quality stamp’. Bin wines are numbered, rather than individually named, after the particular bin, or rack, in the cellar where they were stored.
