Leeuwin Estate is one of the five founding wineries in the Margaret River district of Western Australia. The estate is most famous for its Art Series Chardonnay, which is considered by many to be Australia's best Chardonnay, but Leeuwin has a extensive and reputable portfolio of wines.
The property was formerly a cattle ranch; but in 1972 Napa Valley's Robert Mondavi visited Australia and saw the potential the property had for growing grapes. The first vintage was released in 1979, and the winery became instantly famous when Decanter Magazine gave the 1980 Art Series Chardonnay its highest rating.
Leeuwin is most well-known for their Art Series, which includes wines made from Cabernet Sauvignon, Shiraz, Riesling, and Sauvignon Blanc, in addition to the Chardonnay. Every vintage, an Australian artist is commissioned to design the labels, much like Château Mouton Rothschild.
