Markedly earthy and notably floral-scented aromas of black raspberry liqueur and plum are abundantly laced with sauvage and humus elements. There is excellent size, weight and richness to the big-bodied and intensely mineral-driven flavors that brim with dry extract before exploding on the wonderfully persistent finish where a hint of wood surfaces. Like the Champeaux this should be approachable after 7 to 8 years yet if you want to see it at its peak, it will need at least 12 to 15 years.

Denis Mortet took every measure to produce the finest, ripest fruit possible, creating a style of wine which in Denis' words was "a pleasure to drink young or old". This is a man for whom young vines are 25-years-old and who cultivated his village wines just as if they were a Grand Cru; thus all his reds saw 100% new oak (François Frères oak at that), which they carried very well, although in some years the wines were highly oak-driven. Denis Mortet's immaculate vineyards were the key and his energy in leaving no stone unturned in the pursuit of excellence completed the picture. His 10 hectares encompass 14 different appellations and is a far cry from the days of his father, Charles , who started off with only one hectare. Denis Mortet continued to expand his holdings before his untimely passing, and his two grands crus, Clos-de-Vougeot and Chambertin, are both on a lease.
Sadly, Denis Mortet committed suicide in early 2006. His last vintage was 2005.
